you are not supposed to talk during massage

There was a time where I thought no talking during a massage was the way to go.

Not so much anymore.

I work in a very intimate service. In my experience I found that there are people who enjoy conversation during their massages which may help them receive even more benefit.

Physical contact can help stimulate feelings of being cared for. Being audible can help someone feel heard.

Some people chit chat because they are nervous. I get it. You’re in a dimly lit room with a stranger, you’re naked, and soft music is playing. Talking is a way of getting comfortable and building that trusting relationship with the massage therapist.

I’ll engage in chit chat as much as I sense is appropriate. It helps me understand the person better and influence where my work may be most helpful.

If a client wants to have respectful conversation throughout the entire service, I’m fine with that. They are paying me for my time and I can talk and work in unison.
